Brief Session Description: The Springfield Public Schools, based on three years of co-planning between the Academic and IT Departments launched their WeLearn digital learning initiative in September of 2016 with the provision of laptop PCs for every student in grades 3 to 12 across all 55 schools. This session, co-presented by the Academic and IT leadership of the District, will focus on the planning process that led WeLearn to become the center of District's strategic plan for dramatically improving core instruction and rapidly narrowing the achievement gap. Rather than trying to use technology for all things or anything, the District has asked teachers to simply focus on leveraging the available technology to empower students with more engaging and rigorous student tasks. Despite three years of planning, the initiative is still new and the presenters will talk openly about the success and challenges in the midst of the first year of Districtwide implementation.
