11:15 AM - 12:30 PM: Breakout 6
This interactive session covers key strategies and techniques to effectively design, develop, and lead a board leadership retreat and address sensitive issues including the role of the board in fundraising efforts. Board leadership retreats provide an opportunity to address and determine effective approaches to enhance fundraising efforts and how to increase a board's engagement with encouragement and support instead of arm-twisting and guilt.
At the same time, board leadership retreats are fraught with many potential difficulties, pitfalls, and dangers if not structured and designed appropriately.
This session provides a specific step by step methodology to increase the effectiveness of your retreat by ensuring that the focus remains on supporting the strategic direction of the organization. Executive directors, board chairs, and those responsible for developing the plans for these retreats often struggle with how to differentiate a retreat from a board meeting, ways in which to appease strong personalities with different opinions, and the political dynamics often at play. This session provides a road map to conduct a successful retreat with tangible outcomes, accountability measures, and methods to ensure that those involved feel a sense of accomplishment at the conclusion of the retreat.
