8:15 AM - 9:20 AM: Breakout 1
WARNING: Big Changes are coming to the Major Donor Market near you?BEWARE
Using data from Giving USA, the AFP Fundraising Effectiveness Report and the Target Analytics Index of Fundraising Performance, along with census and other U.S. government data, and other economic and population studies, this presentation will examine the U.S. fundraising trends from pre-recession to the present time, tracking trends in revenue and donors. In the US, the sector has been raising more money from fewer donors post-recession. That has implications for the future of fundraising as more and more of the charitable dollars come from fewer and fewer donors.
In the presentation, we will examine the shifting media use in the U.S., away from mail to online, particularly for making payments. We will also examine the effects of recent fiscal and monetary policies on the donor population and the consequences for donative behavior. Changes in interest rates, cost of living adjustments, and medicare charges are all affecting the budgets of the donor universe. Changes in the tax code are in some cases eliminating the deductibility of large gifts. Putting fundraising in context of the economy as a whole is important to developing good practices for the future.
