Spiro Find Lyme Testing (2:00 PM - 2:30 PM)
Speaker Bio: Dr. Brian Fallon, Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center and Director of the Lyme & Tick-borne Diseases Research Center, has spent much of his academic career focused on the overlap of psychiatry, medicine, and neurology. While his early work focused on somatoform and obsessional disorders, he gradually developed an expertise in the neuropsychiatric aspects of Lyme disease. Like many clinicians, he is troubled by the current state of testing which is either insensitive, non-specific, or hard-to-interpret. Recent developments in immunology suggest that a new approach to diagnostics that detects active infection is possible - one based on the early innate immune response rather than the adaptive immune response (the basis of ELISAs and Western blots). Dr. Fallon has been collaborating with Oxford Immunotec and Boulder Diagnostics to assess a new assay called "Spirofind" which targets this early immune response. This talk will describe this assay and provide the scientific basis to support the investigation of its potential use as a surrogate marker of active infection.
