Abstract of Session/Presentation: Much of the dialogue surrounding college-level general education courses in recent years has been focused on how best to engender various "literacies" among students, yet the phrase has many potential definitions, some of which rely on quantitative skills more than others. Is it possible to be scientifically literate but not numerate? What role do QR skills and affect play in underrepresentation of students with various identities in STEM disciplines? We invite all educators who: (a) have ever heard a student say they are "not a math person", (b) have struggled to change student skills in and attitudes toward mathematics in the classroom, and/or (c) want to help their students master quantitative skills through Astro 101 to join us for a discussion and workshop around the role that QR skills should play in Astro 101.
