Abstract of Session/Presentation: This presentation will describe the creation and implementation of the West Virginia Climate Change Professional Development (WVCCPD) project as an example of how to engage with teachers and students on the topic of climate change. This project illustrates a variety of important considerations, including: (1) building collaborations beyond astronomy with interdisciplinary researchers and community activists, (2) grant writing and funding various aspects of project costs and deliverables, and (3) engaging in climate change learning and activity design with teachers and empowering climate communication with students. Project outcomes so far include engagement with over 40 teachers, a website with resources and a suite of standards-based activities and presentations, and student-produced audio and video climate change "Public Service Announcements" that have been broadcast to over 40,000 West Virginians. We hope this project inspires others to creatively build and fund their own climate change professional development communities.
