Gamifying Your Astronomy Class: SPECIAL ASTRO 101 PANEL SESSION
Online courses pose significant challenges for engaging students. In this panel we share how gamifying your class may lead to increased engagement, increased diversity of students interested in astronomy, and new ways to assess what students know. Panelists will give examples of how gaming has helped them: deliver an asynchronous joint science-art course, "flip" instruction so in-class time can explore socio-cultural implications of astronomy and space exploration, create a flexible, mastery-based, zero-textbook-cost course in both synchronous and asynchonous modes. Models for game deployment in astro education using different game forms ("University of Mars", "At Play In The Cosmos") and different evaluation tools will be discussed.
