Playing with the Universe: Simulations in Astro 101 -- SPECIAL ASTRO 101 PANEL SESSION
Computer simulations are widely used tools in astronomy for understanding physical situations, interpreting observations, and identifying new phenomena to explore. Freely available simulations, such as PHET, Open Source Physics, ScienceSims, and AstroSims, enable students to engage in these same processes on their laptops and phones. In this panel, we focus on example use cases such as qualitative exploration of phenomena, visualizing phenomena from multiple perspectives, and students writing simulations themselves. We will discuss both the mechanics of using existing simulations and how they integrate with classroom goals of engagement, content mastery, and skill development. The panel will also discuss gaps in the current body of simulations.
