La Petite école de l'espace ("Little school of space"), a Successful Online Event for 3-6 Year Olds
La Petite école de l'espace ("Little school of space") is an online event for 3 to 6-year-old children and their family. In these 30 minutes live events, astrophysicists Marie-Eve Naud and Frédérique Baron (from the Institute for research on exoplanets at Université de Montréal and the Observatoire du Mont-Mégantic) tell space-themed stories, play games and answer the child's questions about astronomy. This initiative started in July 2020, as a way to reach young children during the confinement. A second edition was broadcast in September 2020, and a third is planned for December 2020. The recordings remain available on our YouTube channel :, and can be watched at any time. The two editions attracted many thousands families, either live or afterwards (>2500 views for the July edition, >5000 views for the September edition). It also allowed a lot of asynchronous interactions with the families: a few days before the event, children can send their questions (in written or video format). After they watched it, they can share an art piece to show what they learned. In this 10-minute Oral Presentation, we will present the concept, what we do during the events, but also how we successfully interacted with the families. We received about 100 and 150 questions for the July and September editions, respectively, and 75 and 150 drawings for the September edition).
