Zooming to Engage Students
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced K-16 educators to rethink how to design their courses and engage their students using remote or online instructional platforms, such as Zoom. Zoom is a videoconferencing platform that makes possible face-to-face instructional engagement at a time when in-person instruction is not necessarily possible. While Zoom can be used to support traditional lecture-style instructional periods, it also hosts a variety of features, options, and tools that can be leveraged to create more interactive engagement instructional periods than lecture alone. In this interactive session, we will discuss and demonstrate (1) how to use and set up Zoom breakout rooms, (2) how to use and set up different Zoom polling options, (3) how to enable/disable and use other Zoom options for student engagement, and (4) how to set up office hours using Zoom. Participants will also receive how-to reference sheets so that they can independently practice what they learn even after the session.
