Stone Edge All-Sky (SEAS) Survey
Remotely operated telescopes provide opportunities for students worldwide to engage with each other and participate in authentic research experiences. The SEAS Survey was launched in May 2020 by GLAS Education in partnership with two International Astronomical Union (IAU) Regional Offices of Astronomy for Development in Africa. Undergraduate and high school students in the US, Nigeria, and Zambia work with astronomers and mentors at GLAS to develop and carry out an all-sky survey using the 0.5 meter Stone Edge Observatory (SEO) telescope in Sonoma, California. The SEO telescope is equipped with an FLI Proline PL230 camera with SDSS filters, ensuring complementarity with existing datasets. This project aims to provide students with experience in data acquisition, data management, and image analysis to support future work. As the project has gained momentum, we had to look for ways to accommodate more participants. Currently, forty students from Nigeria, Zambia, Cameroon, Ghana, and Mauritius are waiting to join the project. This presentation will provide an overview of the educational goals of the project, the logistics and infrastructure needed to accommodate new participants, and insights from our early work.
