Interdisciplinary Teams for Teacher Professional Development
Secondary school teachers often lack the necessary content background in astronomy to teach such a course confidently. Beyond the content though, teachers need opportunities to embed the content in pedagogically sound practices. We report on our interdisciplinary approach to design, develop, field, and iteratively improve the San Antonio Teacher Training Astronomy Academy (SATTAA). In particular, we present how our separate areas of expertise, in content and STEM pedagogy, led to a synergistic process of teacher professional development that has now resulted in three cohorts of alumni. Our goals for the session are: (1) to share our interdisciplinary processes and lessons learned, and (2) to broadly provide a space for astronomy educators to connect and explore the lessons learned and open needs in their own outreach. Throughout this interactive session we invite participants to join the conversation through voice or chat contributions. In addition, audience members will be invited to participate in breakout room discussions intended to support an exchange of ideas, of lessons learned, and of identification of shared programmatic needs. Following small group interactions, the discussion will return to whole group exploration of audience perspectives and of potential collaborations.
